Did It

I love lists. I'd try to find a way to communicate strictly in them if I could. It's how I get stuff done. It's how I keep myself on task. It's how I remember the things that I have to do and even the things that I want to do.
At work, once all of the regular, has-to-be-done-without-question work is done, I make a to-do list. Otherwise I'll just sit there and stare at people. It's not that there's nothing to do. There's plenty to do but my brain needs a tight reign from time to time.

Yesterday was my day off. I especially need to-do lists on my days off or I'll never get anything done. A lot of people probably think that's the whole point but on days when I just sit around and stare at Pinterest for 8 hours (yes, that has happened--mostly), then I look around my house and I feel pretty bad about myself. So yesterday I went nuts and wrote up a massive to-do list. It looked like this.

To Do Today 11/29/2011
  1. Start the day off right with a healthy breakfast.
  2. Fold up the couch.
  3. Clean up the coffee table.
  4. Take out the garbage.
  5. Wash out the kitty litter pan.
  6. Finish the dishes.
  7. Wipe down the counters.
  8. Do one load of laundry.
  9. Put up the Christmas tree.
  10. Mail bills.
  11. Listen to This American Life.
  12. Shower.
  13. Paint Finger Nails.
  14. Watch New Girl.

Don't judge my to-do list. Some times you have to mix in the super easy and fun things with the stuff that you don't want to do. It tricks your brain into thinking that everything is fun. And you can listen to This American Life while you do the first three things on the list. Which is what I did. But, guess what, when I woke up this morning, my list from yesterday looked like this:

To Do Today 11/29/2011
Kiki: Protector of the Tannenbaum
  1. Start the day off right with a healthy breakfast.
  2. Fold up the couch.
  3. Clean up the coffee table.
  4. Take out the garbage.
  5. Wash out the kitty litter pan.
  6. Finish the dishes.
  7. Wipe down the counters.
  8. Do one load of laundry.
  9. Put up the Christmas tree.
  10. Mail bills.
  11. Listen to This American Life.
  12. Shower.
  13. Paint Finger Nails.
  14. Watch New Girl.

I even did some extra things, like cleaning all of the clean laundry off of my bed so that I would have somewhere to sleep. And making soup and french fries to feed to Andrew and Ryan.

Also, it should go without saying that in order to put up the Christmas tree, one must first listen to Christmas music. More lists!! Yes, but Christmas music is the frickin' worst. And I will stand by that. It's terrible. All day at my job I have to listen to Britney Spears singing "Santa, Can You Hear Me?" And Justin Bieber doing a Christmas duet with Usher. That really ruins it. But I wanted to be in the mood so I went to Spotify and put together a playlist of very nice Christmas songs that, in moderation, are so nice.

So, because my Christmas tree is up and my house is clean enough to satisfy me, I leave you with this. My absolute favorite version of my absolute favorite Christmas song.

PS This is my second most favorite Christmas song.

I think that is one of the best renditions of The Christmas Song I've ever heard. And I love your second most favorite. :)
Not that you asked, but my very favorite Christmas song is "Christmas Time Is Here", and my second is "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen" (I like this song so much, I'll even listen to Rascal Flatts sing it.).

I like lists too, but I have a habit of losing them and forgetting what I was supposed to do which accounts for not getting as much done as I would if I were to keep track of my list and draw lines through the completed tasks. I did have a list for Thanksgiving meal prep and the getting ready beforehand and what to do when guests arrive and I go on overload. On Thanksgiving Day I felt like a kid with a security blanket- my list- reading it, holding it, checking, re-checking, holding it, losing it, freaking our, finding it… I LOVE the part where I get to throw the list away whether it was adhered to or not. On to a new list! I'm working on a new list now for Christmas. The list will be revised over and over no doubt, but the best part of the list is crossing off done stuff.
Laundry would most likely be on every "To Do" list I'd ever make.
Christmas songs… I can't choose a fave. I never thought of your second favorite as a Christmas song, but sure. I am going to compile a Christmas song faves list soon. I do think there is good, fun or lovely Christmas music. I like Eartha Kitt's "I'm gettin nuthin for Christmas" quite a bit, but I like me a beautiful rendition of Carol of the Bells too.Your tactic of including fun things with stuff you don't want to do may be just the thing! Sometimes I give myself a beat-the-clock game and set the timer for however long I think a task will take until I'm sick of the timer reminding me I'm a … whatever, but sometimes I need a timer and I need to be reminded. I hate when my comments are almost as long or longer that the original post. Sorry. Merry list making and keeping.
